Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture.

In 2007 were involved in Heritage Open Days , opening buildings, offering guided tours and giving historical talks. The new Heritage Open Days round is about to open thus if you want a way to raise your profile and educate others about your historic environment this is your perfect opportunity.

It would be interesting to hear the thoughts from Civic Societies who participated last year on what the benefits of being involved is?

We participated a few years ago although it was not to successful.

I do know however a neighbouring Society do get involved and seem to think it is a good project. I would be interested to know how we could get invovled again if someone could give us information.

Dear Civic Societies,

The HODs steering group has just confirmed next year’s HODs dates. As many of you may have already guessed, it’ll be from 10-13 September 2009.

The great thing about HODs is that it is really up to you what and how you want to celebrate your local cultural assets. Simply grab the opportunity to put yourself on the national map, raise your society’s profile locally and regionally, showcase your work, forge new partnerships, raise membership, or drum up support for a campaign. Whatever the reasons for taking part, remember you do it for yourself and your community not for the Civic Trust or English Heritage (although we’d love to see more civic societies involved). If you have any queries and would like to discuss your ideas or concerns give us a ring. The HODs team can be reached on 020 75397918 or at
