Thirty schemes from around the UK have won awards at a major ceremony in Newcastle on Wednesday 12th March. The Civic Trust Awards originally attracted over 400 entrants, and the winners are projects that are recognised as culturally, socially or economically beneficial, and make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment.

Chair of the Civic Trust, Philip Kolvin said: “This year’s winners include private houses and public spaces, museums, schools and public art. We are proud that the Awards encompass such a wide range of schemes, and allow commercial developments to compete with community projects in providing better places for people.”

Was Philip right, should the Civic Trust have given the Awards it did? Did we Award a Scheme that you did not agree with? Perhaps we did not award something you felt was particularly worthy?

We would be keen to hear your comments????

I don’t know if you got it right as I have not viewed a copy of the winners? Where can I access this?

To compliment the differing standards in design across the country do the Civic Trust have plans to develop a model that can be replicated by communities across the country in awarding best practice and recognising locally significant schemes. I know some civic societies have a design award but I would be interested in learning more.

I certainly welcome the local design awards and would like to see more schemes that are recognised locally being put forward or encouraged by our Civic Societies to apply for the national scheme.

We have developed an assessment methodology for Civic Trust Awards which has standardised the way schemes are assessed. We recognise that standards of design can vary considerably and would welcome to adoption of the national assessment methodology at a local level. However, this is only a concept idea at this stage and would require wide reaching consultation with our members before any proposals are put forward.
